Soon, you'll be able to combine Hue lighting changes with your customised Siri Shortcut instructions that do numerous things at once.
Guess Hue will introduce Siri Shortcuts support this fall?
The answer is Philips Hue, in case the horrible pun (and, you know, the headline) didn't give it away. Hue's lights, the most popular, high-profile smart lights in today's connected home, have long been fast to collaborate with Apple wherever possible. It was one of the first items to support Apple HomeKit, the company's iOS-based smart home technology.
HomeKit compatibility already allows you to control your Hue lights through Apple's Home app or Siri voice controls, but Siri Shortcuts take things a step further. For starters, Siri Shortcuts allow you to personalise those voice commands and configure them to do numerous things at once.
For example, saying "Hey Siri, wake me up" when your alarm goes off in the morning may cause your Hue lights to fade on while also playing music through your phone or an AirPlay-compatible speaker like the Apple HomePod. Saying "Hey Siri, I'm home" when you return home from work in the evening may switch on your lights and send a text message to your spouse.
All of this will be an improvement above the current HomeKit connection with Siri Shortcuts, which is still in beta. I contacted Apple to inquire whether we can expect comparable, device-specific Siri Shortcuts for HomeKit items across the board, and I'll update this space once I hear back.
Philips made the news this week at its IFA 2018 press conference in Berlin, tucking it in between recapping the various new Hue lights that arrived this summer. The Hue Adore bathroom mirror, the Hue Outdoor Lightstrip, and the Hue Play and Signe accent lights are all designed to operate with the new Hue Entertainment TV sync feature.
